Oxenfree[1]

“Oxenfree is a supernatural mystery/horror graphic adventure game developed and published by Night School Studio. It was released for iOS, Android, and Nintendo Switch versions in 2017. In Oxenfree, players assume the role of the teenage girl Alex on a weekend trip to a local island. After seemingly supernatural events occur, Alex and her friends must unravel the secrets of the island.”

At the moment, the first-time user experience costs around 4½ hours on average.

3 Things I Like

  1. Mechanics: This is an engaging choice-based adventure puzzle-solving narrative game told by compelling dialogues with a simple and unique radio-tuning mechanic to discover and solve clues.

  2. Dynamics: The responses I made in conversations would dramatically affect the relationships with NPCs and the branches of the exploratory experience, which leads me to desire to revisit the game.

  3. Aesthetics: The sensation (visuals, audio, and interactions) is memorable and intuitive while I am discovering on a mysterious and creepy island.

The whole first-time experience is easy to learn, hard to master and efficient to engage.

Read the above thoroughly to get free content about dislikes as follows:

3 Things I Dislike (Critical Thinking)

  1. Repeatedly tuning the radio wave on a broad spectrum can be boring after a while of playing.

  2. It is impossible to navigate the camera to move the avatar and target the destination more efficiently.

  3. Sometimes, the dialogue rhythm was too quick, and lots of information appeared in a second.

I may have missed some snippets in the dialogue. However, after replaying the game several times, I will get used to these initial experiences.

Overall, the game is fascinating and worthy of playing again and again.

APPENDIX: MDA Framework[2]

“In game design the Mechanics-Dynamics-Aesthetics (MDA) framework is a tool used to analyze games.

  • Mechanics are the base components of the game - its rules, every basic action the player can take in the game, the algorithms and data structures in the game engine etc.

  • Dynamics are the run-time behavior of the mechanics acting on player input and "cooperating" with other mechanics.

  • Aesthetics are the emotional responses evoked in the player.”
